The coronavirus lockdown has meant that everyone has to get used to a new way of life. And although it’s not a pleasant time by any means, it’s important that you try and stay as positive as possible.
A time when everyone can appreciate their loved ones, it can be spent enjoying activities within the home – rather than the planned outdoor activities that you previously might have had in the calendar.
But if you’re lost for inspiration, then you might not know where to start. To help guide you, here is a list of 7 fun and extraordinary activities that you can enjoy throughout the lockdown:
- Baking with the Kids
Being at home with the little ones might be a very daunting experience – especially if it’s one that you’re not used to as you’re always at work. So if you’re looking for a way to keep them occupied, baking could be the answer. A fun yet simple activity, it will keep the both of you entertained for hours at a time. From the popular banana bread recipe to cupcakes, there are so many delicious things that you can make in your kitchen without having to be a professional baker.
Your kids will love saying that they helped to bake something and it’s a wonderful family activity that gives you a chance to connect. Shutting you off from the outside world for a while, it will make it feel as though there is a sense of normality. It will also give them a break from homeschooling or constantly being on their tablets.
- Learn a New Language
Alternatively, if you’re looking for an activity to take on yourself, then why not learn a new language? With being inside all of the time it’s the perfect opportunity to hone your skills. From the moment that you download an app (such as Duolingo), you can start learning whatever language you please.
Not only will this keep your mind active, but it’s very useful for the future when you’re allowed to travel outside of the country again. A unique activity that gives you a break from working, it’s simple but can be very enjoyable.
- Get Out into The Garden
This can be an activity that you either enjoy on your own or as a family. Giving you the chance to breathe in some fresh air and get creative, gardening is a fun activity to undertake whilst in lockdown. Plus, the results of it are ones that you’ll be proud of long after the quarantine ends.
Consider mowing the lawn, planting some flowers (you can easily get seeds delivered) and giving it that TLC that it deserves. This is particularly useful if you haven’t touched the garden since before winter. Even if you aren’t the most green-fingered individual, you might surprise yourself with what you can do to it.
- Game Nights
Another wonderful idea is to enjoy game nights with your family each week. Of course, there are games you can enjoy by yourself (e.g putting a free bet online), but there’s nothing quite like playing a good old-fashioned board game with your family.
By setting out the game on your table and gathering your loved ones around the table you’re bound to have a wonderful night together. Just try and keep the arguments at a minimum – i.e. maybe avoid Monopoly.
- DIY, DIY, DIY
This is an activity that will not only benefit you, but also your family who can reap what you’ve created/done. Another way of getting active and creative is to take on a DIY project. Whether this is creating a decking in your garden, renovating the spare room in your home or another DIY activity, it will fill you with a sense of pride the moment it’s done.
DIY is also great for the mind as it will take your focus off of the stresses that the virus is bringing – giving you a break from the internet and the daily news reports. All you need for a DIY project is some inspiration (found on a site like Pinterest or B&Q), the right materials and the motivation to successfully complete whatever you start.
- Family Film Night
If you want to spend an evening as a family but don’t fancy playing a game, then maybe a family film night is the way to go. Set up a classic or family favourite on your TV, microwave some popcorn, grab a blanket and experience this fabulous pastime. Simple yet effective, it’s a form of escapism that everyone can benefit from at the moment.
Plus, with the number of streaming services now available from the comfort of your home there is seamlessly a never-ending list of films that you can watch. From Disney Classics that are bound to get the kid’s votes to family-favourites like Indiana Jones, you’ll be able to find one that suits all of your tastes.
- Virtual Pub Quiz
If you’re yet to experience this, then you’re in for a real treat. A popular way of spending time during the lockdown, a virtual quiz is a great opportunity to create a unique round and play against your long-distance friends. Something that can happen every week or fortnight, it creates a routine that gives you an activity to look forward to.
Done through a Zoom call or another similar type of software, it’s the perfect chance to catch up with them and see how they are coping whilst doing a fun activity that you would have previously done in person. Staying in contact with them is key during the lockdown and has numerous health benefits – such as easing anxiety.
Final Thoughts
So, there you go! Those are 7 extraordinary activities that you can enjoy during the lockdown. What activity you decide to do, of course, is up to you. But whichever you choose, you’ll be able to spend the rest of the lockdown feeling more upbeat and as content with the situation as possible.
